Meeting of two souls: Nawang and Miao

Nawang Khechog and Miao Yimin

It must have been destined for them to meet. Grammy nominee Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog and internationally renowned Chinese flutist Miao Yimin met in Mcleod Ganj on a historic day — the 46th anniversary of the Tibetan national uprising day — 10 March 2005.

The meeting was short, nevertheless they had a little natter and posed for photographers.

Although Nawang Khechog was in the town, not to perform, but to make a documentary film on his late spiritual teacher, Miao Yimin was in McLeod Ganj to perform on the Tibetan uprising day to show his solidarity with the Tibetans.

He performed before His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the members of the Tibetan government-in-exile, the local Tibetans and other international guests.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Miao Yimin Yimin performed in a 'Peace Concert' the next day at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, earning accolades for his exceptional flute performances. The concert was jointly organised by the Tibetan government-in-exile and the World Youth Leadership Network.

Other artistes who performed in the concert were the group Thangtong Lhugar, Kelsang Chukie Tethong and Zamira Chenn (from Israel).

Miao Yimin plays Dizi and Xiao bamboo flutes, which are transverse and vertical respectively. He is one of the founders of the New York-based Ba Ban Chinese Music Society. He has won several awards in China.
