With the aim of preserving and promoting traditional Tibetan music, Dorjee Tsering, a Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts alumni, announced the establishment of a new Tibetan Music Centre in Mcleod Ganj a few days ago.

Stated goals of the centre include training of young Tibetans and enthusiasts in traditional Tibetan music and document traditional Tibetan music through research.

It will also engage in exchange programmes to establish networks with individual musicians and music schools and institutes around the world.

Individuals interested in traditional Tibetan music will have the opportunity to learn and excel the art. There will be music workshops and live concerts.

The centre will work towards documenting various songs and dances from different parts of Tibet, complete with their history and other relevant information. Efforts will be made to publish song books with standard notations.

An ongoing programme of the centre is the hour-long traditional Tibetan music concert at Yong Ling kindergarten on every Thursdays and Sundays.

Introductory music classes offered to students from December to February during the school winter break has proved successful.

With the stated goals and the experience gained over the years as a result of the implementation of different programmes, the centre will gradually work towards establishing a Traditional Tibetan Music School. In order for the centre to carry out its various programmes, the director is seeking funding assistance from generous donors to materialise the goals.

Dorjee Tsering is an alumnus of TCV School and Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Dharamshala, India. After graduating from TIPA, he went to serve as a music and dance teacher in a few Tibetan schools for over a decade.

He has released six albums of traditional and modern songs so far.
